The Protected Geographical Indications for the wines of Evia
The wine map of Evia includes eight names of Wines that have been registered in the EU Registers as Protected Geographical Indications. PGI Evia wines: The most important in terms of production size is PGI Evia which is used for white and red wines. On an island like Evia, viticulture could not be absent. A crop that comes from the depths of history and carries many promises for the future. You will find vineyards in lowland areas, on steep slopes, but also perched on Dirfi up to 600 meters. The varieties used for the production of white wines are Savvatiano, Roditis, Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Monemvasia Grenache Vlanc, and Sauvignon Vlanc. There are also many reds, including Mandilaria, Vradyanos, Agiorgitiko, Liatiko, Karabraimis as well as the foreign Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache rouge, and Merlot. Their combinations give us PGI Evia white, rosé and red wines from dry to sweet. PGI Ritsona wines: The area of Ritsona is located in Avlis, where the sacrifice of Iphigenia took place and from where the Greeks set sail for Troy. In this region, the vine and the wine have a centuries-old tradition which until recently was connected to Sabvatiano and Retsina. Now, however, PGI Ritsona wines cover a wide range of wines from white to red. The varieties involved in their production are the whites Savvatiano, Roditis, Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Monemvasia, Aidani, Athiri, Grenache blanc and Sauvignon blanc and the reds Agiorgitiko, Mandilaria, Vradiano, Liatiko, Karabraimis, Ritino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache rouge, Merlot and Syrah. Its location, on the western side of Dirfys, has an interesting microclimate that favors the development of viticulture. PGI Lilandio field wines include white, rosé and red, from dry to semi-sweet, which come from Greek and foreign varieties such as Savvatiano, Roditis, Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Athiri, Moschofilero, Sauvignon blanc, Mandilaria, Agiorgitiko, Karabraimis, Ritino, Vradiano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache rouge and Merlot.
